Snow Make up Days vs Virtual Instruction?

Posted Date: 2/14/25 (7:23 PM)

Dear TSD Community,

As we work through this challenging winter season, I have been asked several times why we schedule "make up days" rather than use virtual instruction or flexible instruction days (FIDs) like many other schools do.

The short answer to this question is that we feel that "in person" education is a better option for our learners, as a whole.  Our schools and community were clear during the Covid years that "having school" was the preferred and most beneficial option.  I will admit that virtual school or even FIDS (there is a difference which isn't important for now) has improved and can be a viable option for many of our students.  However, I will also maintain that many of our learners (elementary students, less motivated kids, those with special needs, etc.) may get little benefit from virtual instruction, especially when it is not their chosen option.  Therefore, we have opted not to use FIDS or other virtual instruction and instead to make up the days in person.

I will be reasonable as we work through any additional weather days.  At this point, we are into the first week of June.  I will certainly make every effort, possibly including some virtual options, to not extend school beyond the first week of June.

I spoke about this at our School Board meeting Monday evening and the Board will be considering this topic as it approves next year's school calendar.

Thanks, as always, for your support.

With Rocket Pride,
Mr. B.
